The NICU at St. Joseph's Health care is the regional Level III NICU serving Southwestern Ontario. As part of the tertiary care perinatal program, we provide care for critically ill and premature newborns born at our center and transferred in from the Level I and Level II hospitals throughout the region. The NICU is a 42-bed unit of which 26 are designated Level III and 16 II. We care for approximately 550 newborns a year in the NICU There were 29 infants and families admitted and discharged home to Lambton County in 2004.

The NICU at St. Joseph's is part of a network of 7 tertiary care NICU's across Ontario. While our primary responsibility is to serve the Southwestern Ontario region we are called upon to accept infants from other regions when one or more of their level III hospitals are closed.

The NICU interdisciplinary team is comprised of Neonatologists, Fellows, Residents, Clinical Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Social Workers, Physiotherapists, a Registered Dietician and Spiritual Care support. Supoort Services are provided by Unit Secretaries, Attendants and Housekeeping. This team works together every day to provide the best care available for infants and families admitted to the NICU.

The key goals of the NICU are to provide evidence based and outcome driven care for premature and ill infants in our care, to provide developmentally supportive, family centered care, to ensure access to tertiary care for all high risk newborns born in or referred to our center, to nurture an environment that fosters multidisciplinary education and clinical research, and to embrace the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph's Hospital. Your support and compassion mean a great deal to the infants, families and staff of the NICU.
